This is a picture taken of a small statue in someone's backyard. I like the way it turned out.

Panera Bread

Here's an interesting view from inside Panera Bread, a bakery and sandwich shop. They have free wireless internet and pleasant seating, so the place is frequented by students who need to study and want to grab a bite to eat. Interestingly, it also seems popular with mountain bikers who want to show off their spandex after a "tough" couple miles. I tend to prefer local places instead, but the food isn't bad here.

Enough said. I only wish I could nap that hard.

I found this diesel tank out back of the IU Art Museum and noticed someone had added a helpful note.

Some quick shots... sorry, no photoshop magic on these! This is a photo of Upland Brewing Co. If you're in Indiana, chances are you'll be able to find this locally brewed beer at many locations. Various Upland flavors have one the "Indiana's Best Beer" award many years in a row. My personal recommendation: Upland Wheat. Joe's favorite would be the Porter. drahcir is probably feelin' the same on the Wheat Ale. If you're in the area, it's a "must try" type of thing. Prices are very reasonable and they also run many specialities. On this particular night, we had a pitcher of Chocolate Stout. It was great... too bad it is not year round!
Here's a shot of Jesse, me, drahcir, and Jamie outside of Upland. There were a few more people to our party, but they rolled in cars, not on bikes! (Joe took the photo! Note the bicycles in the backround. That first red one is MINE!) We're standing outside of the Biergarten area (yes, Upland has a mild German theme!) which has nice seating and occasional live music. The inside has also very nice seating and a nice vibe.

The Upland scene is pretty refreshing from the college-town party vibe. You won't find loud dance music and packed lines in order to buy drinks. On any given night, you'll find people of all ages, as opposed to just the younger partying crew.

Alleys are the place to be

As long as we're on the subject, here are some cargo pallets in an alley just off of Kirkwood near that one church.

Downtown Alleyways

Some of my favorite photos are from the alleyways around Bloomington. While well-known sites like the courthouse and the sample gates are impressive, we've all seen them a million times. I've spent countless hours exploring the alleys behind the buildings downtown, and I really like some of the photos from those explorations. This one is a back door in an alleyway off of College Ave. between Kirkwood and 6th. The second photo is from the same area.

I first noticed this dumpster because of the word "Yak" written in blue.

Herman B Wells Library

These are some trees right outside of the Herman B Wells (that's right, no punctuation after the B, his middle name was simply 'B'!) Library. The lighting made for a really pretty shot, eh?
And now, we have a side shot of the actual library. As far as libraries go, it's pretty aesthetically pleasing in many areas. Lots of shaded areas, nice stone benches... It's a good place to get studying done... which I've done quite a few times. Probably not as much as grad student AlexB, however. ;)

Courthouse Statue

This statue is outside the Monroe County courthouse on the square at the heart of downtown Bloomington. I believe it's part of a set of several statues that commemorate the war of 1812. Unlike the other statues in the set, which are closer to the street, this one is tucked away near the building itself. The day was overcast, and the white light yielded a photo that seems almost black and white. Shot with a 50mm at f/2.8.

Storm rollin' in

Sorry about the grainy quality on this one, had to pull something out of the archives from before I switched to digital. This was taken on the Southeast side of town on S. Smith Road right past the Hyde Park subdivision.

Weird stuff happens early in the morning. The rising sun and the crazy cloud cover made for some pretty awesome photos, but I wouldn't generally recommend getting up this early.

A house soon to be gone

There is more to Bloomington than 2nd street houses... There is a 3rd street!

A very old house at 802 East 3rd street (providing office space for Math graduate students) will be replaced by a new $3 million 3-story building.

Who gets to use new building? Biology, culture and communications departments of Indiana University.

House on 2nd Street

This is a house that M.K. Flem$ta enjoys making fun of, rather than putting on her "list" of favorite houses. She often refers to this as the "Chi-Chi's house" and whenever it goes up for sale, she launches into a rant of "Who the heck is going to buy that house? Everyone thinks that house looks like a little Spanish restaurant. It's so out of place. I mean, it's cute... but cute in the way that I want to eat an enchilada there for lunch, not LIVE there. You know what I mean?? I mean, COME ON. At least lower the price." etc. etc.

However, in the years it has been up for sale, it has never switched owners, she may be on to something... Until then, I'll prepare for the same speech every time we drive by.

Every time

Every single time. Really.

Student Building

Since no one has posted any photos for today... Here is Student Building (completed in 1905). It is close to Sample Gates on campus.

If you don' trust the clck on the tower, you can (almost) always consult the sundial.

Looking down 3rd Street

This is a night shot looking down 3rd Street a few blocks from the downtown area. I like the graffiti behind the sign! Also, I always love light fades from long exposure times. The panorama I posted (even though I have yet to host a larger version) included that service station on the corner and was taken from the parking lot you see to the left of this picture!

Sadly, only one photo today, sorry! However, I did get some new lenses and a fancy new flash... expect some better things to come!

Modern Architecture

This is a modern-looking home on Mitchell Street that always catches my eye. One evening the lighting really set off the blue color, and I was able to get this nice colorful photo with the ever-popular 50mm f/1.8.

Daily Photo PARTY

I didn't take any photos today... (other than the photos taken at this party tonight, most of them taken by Joe Near.) so here are some party photos that we laughed quite a bit at. These were at our friend Justin's party. The party was bigger than just us three, but we were the only ones important enough to photograph, of course. This first one is of me, drahcir, and AlexB partying. It was really awesome of AlexB to show up and party with us!!! (Next time, we need you for real, AlexB! Many hilarious photo conversations went down!) Okay, maybe we're not all lookin' so hot, but I mainly blame this on the flash. (AlexB, I don't really remember what you look like that well... but you have dark hair! My apologies!)
This is a photo of drahcir being ultra-classy drinking a Keystone Light and making a funny facial expression.
I don't even know what kind of a face I'm making here or WHAT I'm looking at, but I laughed every time I looked at this picture.

Here's hoping that we're all able to function at work the next day after the party.

More bunnies and flowers...

Due to working and moving things, I haven't been able to take many photos, but here are a few I just quickly snapped the other day. This is a look into a neighbor's yard (I like their gate!) I didn't even notice that bunny when I first took the picture. How cute.
These are some flowers in my yard. Sadly, I did not plant these, they are annuals planted by the previous owner, but they're mine now. I think they're really pretty.

But, you know girls... always loving flowers and whatnot. Especially me. (Gentlemen, I'm hinting at you! ;))

Sunset on the lake

This is out on Lake Lemon, a little ways north of Bloomington. My grandparents own a little cottage right on the lake and this was shot over the Bloomington Yacht Club next door.

Have you noticed I go on a lot of walks?

I'm a big fan of ivy, and this ivy covered house caught my eye while walking along 1st Street today. The lighting made for an interesting picture! (On nice days, I like to walk around the area. Many people in this area participate in the Bloomington Garden Walk, gardens in this area are GREAT! I should work on ours. ;))
And, just for fun, a picture of some flowers from the same yard. I thought it turned out pretty nicely!

AlexB, you started the trend of 2 photos per day! Now I find it hard to break!

Rabbits on campus

These two pics were taken behind the Swain Hall West (that's on the 3rd street). By the way, lots of squirrels call Dunn's Woods home (I'm sure M.K. Flem$ta will post more on that!)...

Yesterday I saw a couple of rabbits lounging on the grass next to the sidewalk - looks like they are not that much afraid of people. One of them patiently waited while I shot a few pictures!

Since my panorama didn't work out so well (see below), I figured I'd throw in another picture. This is the famous metal sculpture in front of the Indiana University Musical Arts Center (MAC). I'm not a big fan of modern art, so I'm not that fond of it. However, the whole building is unable to be changed (by request of the artist, in exchange for doing all the work for free!)... from the sculpture, to the indoor carpets, to the indoor furniture. I'll have more info and images of that in a day or two. It's crazy!

This is a panorama shot I took from a downtown parking garage. To the left and moving around, there's an anti-abortion poster, a church, the Bloomington Transit bus station, a bank, an old restaurant "(T)he Royal Dog", a place that's maybe a little better for auto work than the shop previously posted in AlexB's photo (it SEEMS a little less shady, at least), and a really sweet van. (Not.)

I thought a panorama would be a sweet idea, but... as you can tell... it's not making Bloomington look so hot. (Every city has its faults!) I'll try to focus on more of the "beautiful" aspects of Bloomington in the comings days.

Edit-- Blogspot won't accept this photo in its actual size and resizes it to a small crappy picture for me... therefore, the extra photo.
Also, RIP to one of my best friends of (almost) 15 years, Jessie. I got him as a birthday present many years ago. (I'm getting old!) I had to put him to sleep, and naturally, I'm very upset. He was a Bloomington resident for most of his life. See how I tie things in?

Back to Bloomington

I'm no M.K. Flem$ta, so here is the crossing of Madison and 3rd street. It's pretty much off the limits of downtown, but yet too urban to see any cows

Old auto repair shop founded [insert a name] knows when and a recently build piece of architecture... It's Bloomington, need I say more?

Tuesday, June 06, 2006

There are cows here.

So I guess this isn't technically Bloomington (just outside the city limits), but cows and farms are a big part of the Indiana lifestyle!

This is a two-for-one deal, you're so lucky!

So, earlier today I shot this picture of a squirrel. I thought it turned out nicely, and I love taking pictures of animals. Especially squirrels. (They're so cute!)

The other picture is a sunset shot I took while walking around the neighborhood the other night. They're no AlexB lake sunsets, but I try! ;)

Beautiful Weather

Lately, the weather has been a little hot, but overall, it's very nice outside. :) This is a shot from the front patio out into the neighbor's yard.

I like the little gate in the distance off to the left, that's also one of my favorite houses that I "must have" if it were to go up for sale. Are you paying attention, Joe? ;)

Many thanks to the daily photo crew that partied with me last night. Most of my day will be spent in bed today, however. :( I hope you're okay, drahcir. ;)

IU Art Museum/Fine Arts

Sorry for being so late at posting this picture! A certain someone else was supposed to post... but they obviously did not get around to it.

This is the point at which the IU Art Museum and the Fine Arts building meet on campus. I thought the lighting and the reflection of the steps in the mirror were neat, and the solo bike seemed cool, too. Architecture is one of my favorite things to shoot.

I like night time photography, and it's not uncommon to see me strolling campus alone setting up shots. (And by alone, I mean with a crew of bodyguards. If you were thinking of killing me, FORGET IT.)

Cafe Django

This is Cafe Django, a cool little jazz bar in the heart of downtown. Fun with tripods at night!

Beck Chapel

As requested by Sarah, pictures of Beck Chapel... (M.K. Flem$ta, I hope that you don't mind me taking the liberty!)

Ok, this chapel is a gift of Dr. and Mrs. Frank Beck, it was built in 1956 (according to this source).

It looks like I was lucky not to run into some event - some 150 weddings occur at this chapel each year!

1st picture is what you see if you just pass by on the way to Memorial Union/7th street (exactly what I did for several years!). 2nd one is a closer look.
