Up the Stairs

Snapped an action shot of a student going to class. Thought the stairs looked neat. I wanted to take the photo WITHOUT someone in it, but I was pressed for time, and this lady was obviously not. She was takin' it slow up the stairs.

This was taken in the courtyard area by Sycamore/Morrison/Goodbody/Memorial Hall. This was along the backside of Memorial Hall.

Here's another picture from our recent ice storm.

A triumphant return (sort of)

Hey there! Sorry for the long hiatus. We've all been busy with school and work and winter here. I'm going to try to post more and get M.K. Flem$ta to do the same, but we probably won't be able to make the "Daily" part of the deal.

Brightly-colored umbrellas at the local public pool compliment the cool water to drive away the incredible humidity and heat we have had lately. During pool hours, it's packed; this photo was taken just after closing. It's supposed to rain today, and then start cooling off somewhat. I'm looking forward to that.

Evening Playground

While the humidity has dropped somewhat in the past couple of days, it remains very hot here in Bloomington. I try to stay indoors until the temperature drops in the evenings. Interestingly, others seem to stay indoors completely; I was surprised to find this playground at Bryan Park totally empty on a beautiful evening.

This is my experimental attempt at taking star photos. I had seen those photos capturing the trails made by the moving stars, and so I wanted to try it myself. I think it turned out reasonably well. This exposure was about 20 minutes, if I remember correctly. Taken the same night as yesterday's sunset picture, and also near Lake Lemon.

Sunset on the Lake

I captured this beautiful sunset last night on Lake Lemon.

Practicing in the Park

Another photo from Bryan Park; martial artists practicing in the cooler environment of the evening.

More Clouds

The sunny (and hot!) weather recently has presented many opportunities for photos of white, puffy clouds. I find it difficult not to take advantage of them. Shot near Woodlawn Ave.

Lonely Picnic Table

A single picnic table near the tennis courts at Bryan Park, made interesting by the evening light.

Showalter Fountain

Here's a shot looking across Showalter Fountain (shown earlier) up close, featuring one of the famous "fish" that have spawned so many IU urban legends.

It's good to be back.

I liked the reflections of the trees off this car's hood, though the driver probably didn't appreciate me leaning on his car to get the shot. Heck with him, he probably doesn't even know what a bicycle is.

Fire escape

Fire in the disco!

Time keeps on slippin'

This clock is over on Pete Ellis drive near the shop where I get all my olde school film photo junk done.

Danger danger!

High voltage!

Bikes on the Square

Here are a couple of bikes chained to a tree on the square in downtown Bloomington. Lots of people who live close to town use bikes instead of cars. Parking downtown is not a lot of fun, and many are happy to avoid high gas prices and to help preserve our environment. Plus, bikes are a lot more fun than cars.

Roof Work

I have always admired this interesting house, and so I figured I should shoot a few pictures when they decided to begin doing some work on it.

This is a picture taken of a small statue in someone's backyard. I like the way it turned out.

Panera Bread

Here's an interesting view from inside Panera Bread, a bakery and sandwich shop. They have free wireless internet and pleasant seating, so the place is frequented by students who need to study and want to grab a bite to eat. Interestingly, it also seems popular with mountain bikers who want to show off their spandex after a "tough" couple miles. I tend to prefer local places instead, but the food isn't bad here.

Enough said. I only wish I could nap that hard.

I found this diesel tank out back of the IU Art Museum and noticed someone had added a helpful note.

Some quick shots... sorry, no photoshop magic on these! This is a photo of Upland Brewing Co. If you're in Indiana, chances are you'll be able to find this locally brewed beer at many locations. Various Upland flavors have one the "Indiana's Best Beer" award many years in a row. My personal recommendation: Upland Wheat. Joe's favorite would be the Porter. drahcir is probably feelin' the same on the Wheat Ale. If you're in the area, it's a "must try" type of thing. Prices are very reasonable and they also run many specialities. On this particular night, we had a pitcher of Chocolate Stout. It was great... too bad it is not year round!
Here's a shot of Jesse, me, drahcir, and Jamie outside of Upland. There were a few more people to our party, but they rolled in cars, not on bikes! (Joe took the photo! Note the bicycles in the backround. That first red one is MINE!) We're standing outside of the Biergarten area (yes, Upland has a mild German theme!) which has nice seating and occasional live music. The inside has also very nice seating and a nice vibe.

The Upland scene is pretty refreshing from the college-town party vibe. You won't find loud dance music and packed lines in order to buy drinks. On any given night, you'll find people of all ages, as opposed to just the younger partying crew.

Alleys are the place to be

As long as we're on the subject, here are some cargo pallets in an alley just off of Kirkwood near that one church.

Downtown Alleyways

Some of my favorite photos are from the alleyways around Bloomington. While well-known sites like the courthouse and the sample gates are impressive, we've all seen them a million times. I've spent countless hours exploring the alleys behind the buildings downtown, and I really like some of the photos from those explorations. This one is a back door in an alleyway off of College Ave. between Kirkwood and 6th. The second photo is from the same area.

I first noticed this dumpster because of the word "Yak" written in blue.

Herman B Wells Library

These are some trees right outside of the Herman B Wells (that's right, no punctuation after the B, his middle name was simply 'B'!) Library. The lighting made for a really pretty shot, eh?
And now, we have a side shot of the actual library. As far as libraries go, it's pretty aesthetically pleasing in many areas. Lots of shaded areas, nice stone benches... It's a good place to get studying done... which I've done quite a few times. Probably not as much as grad student AlexB, however. ;)

Courthouse Statue

This statue is outside the Monroe County courthouse on the square at the heart of downtown Bloomington. I believe it's part of a set of several statues that commemorate the war of 1812. Unlike the other statues in the set, which are closer to the street, this one is tucked away near the building itself. The day was overcast, and the white light yielded a photo that seems almost black and white. Shot with a 50mm at f/2.8.

Storm rollin' in

Sorry about the grainy quality on this one, had to pull something out of the archives from before I switched to digital. This was taken on the Southeast side of town on S. Smith Road right past the Hyde Park subdivision.

Weird stuff happens early in the morning. The rising sun and the crazy cloud cover made for some pretty awesome photos, but I wouldn't generally recommend getting up this early.

A house soon to be gone

There is more to Bloomington than 2nd street houses... There is a 3rd street!

A very old house at 802 East 3rd street (providing office space for Math graduate students) will be replaced by a new $3 million 3-story building.

Who gets to use new building? Biology, culture and communications departments of Indiana University.
